Gastric Balloon
Gastric balloon is a treatment method used for weight loss. During this procedure, a silicone balloon is inserted into the stomach using gastroscopic methods. The balloon fills the stomach halfway and helps the person eat less and feel full faster. When used in conjunction with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, the gastric balloon can aid weight loss. The balloon is usually removed after 6 months.
To Whom Can Gastric Balloon Be Applied?
Gastric balloon is a recommended treatment for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 who have been unsuccessful with other weight loss methods.
In addition, individuals with a BMI between 27-30 but with obesity-related health problems can also have this procedure.
However, pregnant women, people with stomach problems such as esophagitis, gastroparesis or stomach ulcers, or people who have had stomach surgery cannot have a gastric balloon.
Healing Process
Gastric balloon is a lighter procedure compared to other surgical procedures and is usually sent home the same day. In the first few days after the procedure, there may be mild pain and discomfort in the area where the gastric balloon is placed. These pains usually begin to decrease within 1-2 days. In addition, nausea and vomiting may occur in the first days of placement of the gastric balloon.
What To Do
- After the procedure, the diet program should be followed as recommended by our doctor. This program usually starts with liquid foods and gradually transitions to solid foods.
- Exercise should be done regularly. This is beneficial for overall health as well as weight loss.
- Regular checks should be made after the gastric balloon application. In these controls, the condition of the gastric balloon and weight loss are followed.
What You Should Avoid
- After the procedure, excessive food should not be eaten. Since the gastric balloon reduces the stomach capacity of the person, overeating can cause stomach bloating and discomfort.
- Alcohol consumption should be done as recommended by our doctor after the procedure. Alcohol can irritate the stomach after the procedure and excessive consumption can prevent weight loss.
- Smoking should be stopped for at least a few weeks after the procedure.
- Strenuous activities such as heavy sports and weight lifting should be avoided. Such activities can cause gastric balloon displacement and stomach damage. Procedure Duration: 1-3 hours
