Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass is a surgical procedure applied for the treatment of obesity. During this procedure, the stomach is shrunk and part of the small intestine is directly attached to the shrunken stomach. Thus, what a person eats contains fewer calories and is digested faster. Also, nutrient absorption is reduced in the small intestine and a person stays full for longer despite consuming less food. In addition to aiding weight loss, gastric bypass may also reduce other obesity-related health problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.
To Whom Gastric Bypass Can Be Applied?
Generally, people with a body mass index (BMI) above 40 and who have not had positive results with diet, exercise and other weight loss methods may be candidates for gastric bypass.
Individuals with a body mass index between 35-40 may also consider this method if they have serious obesity-related health problems and cannot achieve successful results with other weight loss methods. However, this procedure may not be suitable for every patient.
Healing Process
The recovery process after gastric bypass surgery may vary according to individual differences. However, in general, pain, swelling, weakness and fatigue may be felt in the first few days. In the first days, liquid foods are fed and soft solid foods are started to be consumed as the digestive system begins to heal. In this process, the recommendations of the dietitian should be followed.
