Swallowable Gastric Balloon
Elipse gastric balloon, unlike other gastric balloon methods, is a weight loss method that is applicated by swallowing and does not require endoscopy or sedation. When the capsule placed in the stomach of the patient comes into contact with stomach acid, it swells with the liquid inside, occupies space and creates a feeling of satiety. The capsule dissolves spontaneously with stomach acid after about 4 months. During this period, the patient is supported by diet and exercise program and loses weight.
To Whom Can Elipse Gastric Balloon Be Applied?
Elipse gastric balloon can be applied to people who are over 16 years old and have a body mass index of 27 or higher.
However, gastric balloon application may not be appropriate in some health conditions such as pregnancy, gastrointestinal system diseases, gastric ulcer, previous history of gastrointestinal surgery, excessive alcohol consumption and use of certain medicines.
Healing Process
Elipse gastric balloon is a lighter procedure compared to other surgical procedures and is usually sent to the patient’s home the same day. In the first few days after the procedure, there may be mild pain and discomfort in the area where the gastric balloon is placed. These pains usually begin to decrease within 1-2 days. In addition, nausea and vomiting may occur in the first days of placement of the gastric balloon.
What To Do
- After the procedure, the diet program should be followed as recommended by our doctor. This program usually starts with liquid foods and gradually transitions to solid foods.
- Exercise should be done regularly. This is beneficial for overall health as well as weight loss.
- After the Elipse gastric balloon application, regular checks should be made. In these controls, the condition of the gastric balloon and weight loss are followed.
What You Should Avoid
- After the procedure, excessive food should not be eaten. Since the gastric balloon reduces the stomach capacity of the person, overeating can cause stomach bloating and discomfort.
- Alcohol consumption should be done as recommended by our doctor after the procedure. Alcohol can irritate the stomach after the procedure and excessive consumption can prevent weight loss.
- Smoking should be stopped for at least a few weeks after the procedure. Smoking can negatively affect the healing process after gastric balloon surgery and increase the risk of infection.
- Strenuous activities such as heavy sports and weight lifting should be avoided. Such activities can cause gastric balloon displacement and stomach damage.
